The California Gold Rush of 1849 brought rapid growth to the city of San Francisco and ever since that time, it’s been enjoyed by millions of people, both residents and visitors. Known for its mild, beautiful weather year-round, San Francisco is a hot-spot for people of all ages, beliefs, and cultures. The city sits right on the bay, making it a beautiful spot to enjoy unique cuisine, outdoor activities, scenic views, and a trolley ride or two.
When people think of San Francisco, the first thing they usually think of is the towering red Golden Gate Bridge that stretches from the city to the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula. Built in 1937, the nearly two-mile-long bridge was considered the longest suspension bridge in the world until 1964. Today, it’s one of the most recognized symbols in the U.S. Visitors are welcome to drive, bike, or walk across it.
If you’re a baseball fan, take a trip to the home stadium of the San Francisco Giants. Situated right on the bay, it offers beautiful views as well as a classic design. In fact, it was chosen as the Sports Facility of the Year by Sports Business Journal. If you’re visiting in the spring, catch a game against the rivalrous Los Angeles Dodgers or take a tour of the track, the dugout, the press box, and more.
This beautiful monumental structure was originally built for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition and is one of the only surviving structures from the fair. Today, it hosts art exhibitions, entertainment shows, and music concerts; its Beaux-Arts rotunda and peaceful lagoon make it a favorite location for weddings.
No trip to San Francisco is complete without a ride on the city’s famous cable cars. After that, head to the Cable Car Museum to discover the history behind the popular public transportation system. Discover cable cars dating back to the late 1800s as well as various exhibits and a shop. Best of all, the museum is free.
This island in the San Francisco Bay sits just over one mile offshore and is home to not only the first lighthouse built on the West Coast, but also to the famous federal penitentiary used from 1934 to 1963. Designed as a maximum security prison, Alcatraz was home to several famous inmates including Al Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud, Mickey Cohen, and George “Machine Gun” Kelly. Visitors can choose from several different tours of the prison.
San Francisco is known for its steep hills, which means walking to your destination can quickly become tiring. For an easier way to get there, hail a taxi or choose a mode of transportation provided by the SFTMA (San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency). You’ll find buses, rails, cable cars, and the F-line heritage street car. The area’s metro rails run mainly through the downtown area and areas southwest of downtown while the cable cars only run downtown. For the most versatile transportation, we recommend the buses. There’s also a bike sharing program for those who prefer two wheels.
Bus maps Metro Rail map F-line Street Car System mapIf you’re flying into San Francisco International, be prepared to be several miles from the bay area. If the bay area is your destination, your best bet is to hop on the BART yellow line (also known as the Pittsburg/Bay Point line). This will take you to San Francisco’s downtown area where you can connect to other buses, rails, or cable cars.
If you’re in need of a car rental, truck rental, or limo rental, there are several in the area to choose from:
