Often called the “Big Apple,” New York City is the most populous city in the country, with around 8.5 million people living in five area neighborhoods: The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and Manhattan. While each neighborhood has much to offer, Manhattan is by far the most popular, with attractions like Central Park, the Empire State Building, and more. So, after you land in one of New York Airport’s be sure to check some these amazing spots.
In the middle of Manhattan sits Central Park, a massive 778 acres of grasslands, trees, lakes, sculptures, playgrounds, wildlife, and more (it even boasts a carousel and a zoo!). First established in 1857, the park is a communal gathering place for locals and visitors alike. It serves as a relaxing getaway from the city’s abundance of buildings and sidewalks and is even a common concert location.
Perhaps the most famous entertainment venue in New York City, Radio City Music Hall showcases a variety of musical artists, from folk to R&B to country to rock and roll and more, all in a beautiful theatrical setting. It’s also home to the renowned Radio City Rockette’s dance company.
Perhaps the most iconic part of New York City, the Statue of Liberty stands 305 feet tall on her very own Liberty Island in the New York Harbor. Visitors can travel to the island by ferry where they can view the statue up close and have the opportunity to climb the steps up to her crown. Visitors can also take the ferry to Ellis Island, where over 12 million immigrants entered the United States from 1892 to 1954.
What’s a trip to the Empire State without visiting the Empire State Building? The famous 102-story skyscraper stands at 1,454 feet tall and is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. Visitors can purchase tickets to the open-air Observation Deck, located on the 86th floor for a striking view of the Big Apple. After that, they can head down to the gift shop for some unique gifts.
At the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue sits the major commercial intersection that has been the location of several major events, featured in countless movies, and is the spot of the annual New Year’s Eve celebration and ball drop. Bustling with restaurants, shops, theaters, and museums, Times Square is a unique attraction well worth checking out.
When you live in or are visiting such a large city (304 square miles, to be exact) with a population of nearly 8.5 million people, it’s tough to get around in your own car. That’s why New York City’s MTA system is considered one of the most efficient in the U.S. With a large fleet of taxis, an extensive subway and train system, and a number of bus routes serving each neighborhood, it’s easy to get to wherever you need to go in the Big Apple.
