With historical areas like Fell’s Point and Federal Hill, a beautiful waterfront at Inner Harbor, and more public monuments than any other city, Baltimore is a great place for a vacation. Known as the “city of neighborhoods,” Baltimore has been home to many historical figures including Edgar Allen Poe, Billie Holiday, and The Star-Spangled Banner writer Francis Scott Key, who wrote the national anthem while in the city.
Named one of the top five aquariums in the U.S., the National Aquarium in Baltimore opened in 1981 and features more than 17,000 specimens from over 750 species. With a multiple-story coral reef, an open ocean shark tank, and a hands-on “living seashore,” the aquarium is a great attraction for all ages. Tickets can be bought online or at the venue.
If there’s one thing Baltimore is known for, it’s the abundance of fresh seafood that can be found at the restaurants around the Inner Harbor. Also around the harbor are museums, cultural experiences, and a lively nightlife worth a visit. From the scenic views to the family-friendly activities, Inner Harbor is a great place to spend the day.
If you’re a baseball fan, you can’t miss a trip to Oriole Park, home of the Baltimore Orioles. The stadium was completed in 1992 to replace Memorial Park and is considered one of the most beautiful in Major League Baseball. Catch a game in the springtime or stop by for a tour of the area.
This maritime museum is located at Inner Harbor and is home to three historic museum ships (the USS Constellation, USCGC Taney, and USS Torsk) that played a major role in various historic wars. It’s also home to the Chesapeake, a lightship, and the Seven Foot Knoll Light lighthouse. Visitors can tour any or all of these ships and learn about their history.
Built in 1934, this museum is a great spot for art lovers of all ages. The collection was begun by a father-son team (with the last name of Walters) and includes ancient sculptures, paintings, drawings, objects, and prints from countries like Egypt, Greece, and Etruria, the Americas, China and Japan, the Medieval era, and the Renaissance era. Best of all, admission is free.
Baltimore isn’t known for their public transportation, however, there are several options that you can use to get around through MTA (Maryland Transit Administration): the bus, the MARC train, the Light Rail, and the Metro subway system. MARC trains can take locals and visitors to several outlying suburbs while the Light Rail and buses can be used for getting around in downtown Baltimore. Travelers can also Amtrak, the Washington Metrorail, and the Virginia Railway Express from several stations.
