Traveling During Flu Season? Here’s How to Stay Healthy

parking at EWR

What’s more frustrating than the parking at EWR? We think it’s getting sick while you’re on vacation – especially if it’s the flu. Here, we give you a few tips for staying healthy and enjoying your trip:

Get your flu shot

This is the number-one thing you can do to prevent getting the flu and ruining your trip, so take a few minutes and head to your local doctor or pharmacy for your flu shot.

Drink lots of water

Water naturally flushes our systems of toxins and staying hydrated can help you stay healthy, so make sure you drink lots of water in the days before your trip and during your trip. When you’re dehydrated, you’re more susceptible to sickness.

Keep your hands clean

Chances are your next trip involves flying and as we all know, airports and airplanes are full of germs. Do yourself a favor and wash your hands as often as you can to avoid picking up the flu virus. In addition, it’s a good idea to pack some anti-bacterial waterless hand soap for times when you can’t get to a sink.

Pack some medicine

Depending on where you go, the medication sold there may not be safe or may not be as readily available, so it’s not a bad idea to pack some cold, flu, and sinus medications as a precaution. This way, you can be prepared if you do get sick. Also pack some aspirin or ibuprofen for everyday pains.

Make good diet choices

Vacations tend to make us want to binge and either eat more, eat unhealthily, or both. However, a balanced diet can help your body resist the flu, so trade some of those indulgent carbs and sugars for healthy protein and fiber.

Avoid touching your face

Germs travel quickly through your mouth, nose, and eyes, so limit the amount of contact your hands have with those areas of your face.

Sleep, sleep, sleep

Sometimes it’s hard to sleep on vacation, whether it’s because of the excitement or because of the unfamiliarity of your sleeping situation. Either way, it’s important to stay well-rested – rest acts as a defense for sickness and can also be a cure.
