How to Survive an Annoying Plane Passenger

If you’ve ever sat down on a plane with an empty seat next to you, you know the worrying feeling you get – what’s the person sitting next to me going to be like? If you’ve ever been stuck next to an annoying passenger, it can make the entire flight long and unbearable. Here’s what to do if that happens:

The Talker

For some reason, there are travelers who get on a plane and immediately start telling their life story. While it may be interesting to some, you probably don’t want to hear it – especially since there’s no escaping the person. If you come across a talker while on a plane, there are some things you can do to try to avoid having to listen:

  • Pretent you’re asleep
  • Read a book
  • Put in headphones
  • Pretend you don’t speak English

The Loud Music-Listener

If you’ve ever been next to someone who listens to their music way too loud, your first thought is probably “How can they stand to listen to their music that loud?” Unfortunately there are only a couple ways to deal with this situation:

  • Ask them to turn down their music
  • Listen to your own music loud enough to drain theirs out
  • Invest in earplugs

The Smelly Food Eater

While the strong smell of tuna fish or egg salad may be tolerable in a large, open room, it can be borderline offensive when it’s right next to you. Short of taking the chance of asking your neighbor not to eat his food, you’ll likely just have to wait it out and deal with it. A couple things that may help distract you from the smell include:

  • Chewing gum
  • Eating a mint
  • Applying a scented lip gloss or lip balm

The Irritating Child

Arguably, the most annoying type of passenger on a plane is a baby who won’t stop crying, but a close second is an irritating child. Whether they keep kicking your seat, banging on their tray table, yelling about their trip, or engaging in some sort of other activity, an irritating child can make your flight a nightmare. Try these steps to quell the frustration:

  • Look back several times to alert the parents to the situation
  • If the parents do nothing, kindly ask them if they could step in
  • If still nothing is done, try giving the child a magazine or another distraction
