15 Tips for Efficient Packing

Make the Most of Your Luggage Situation

An upcoming vacation can be very exciting, but one thing many travelers don’t look forward to is packing for it. Whether you tend to over-pack, under-pack, or simply hate the process of it, our Newark Airport parking company has a few tips to make things go a little smoother:

Wear the Big Stuff: When you’re packing, set aside your bulkiest items (like a coat, boots, sweater, etc.) and try to wear as many as you can on the plane. This will leave much more room in your suitcase for your other belongings.

Leave Large Items: If you’re going somewhere that requires large items (like a beach chair or umbrella), skip packing them and just buy or rent them when you get there.

Consider Waiting: While it’s convenient to take along travel-sized toiletries, waiting until you get to your destination can also be a good way to go. If you’re only going to use a little bit of your toiletries, simply buy them at your destination – then you won’t have to worry about packing them.

The Roll Method: If you’re usually one to fold your clothes, our Newark Airport parking company suggests rolling them next time. You’ll find you save room and you prevent more wrinkles from forming.

Negative Space: When packing, train your eye to look for negative space (like the holes inside your sneakers or the pockets in your jacket). You can use these spaces to pack things like socks, tank tops, jewelry, and other small items.

Think About Your Shoes: It’s tempting (especially for those who love shoes) to want to take several pairs of shoes with you, but before you pack them, really think about whether you’re going to wear them or not. You can save a lot of room by cutting down on your shoe selection.

Go Neutral with Jewelry: When picking out your jewelry, choose neutral pieces that can be worn with more than one outfit.

Pack a Carry-On: If you’re checking your luggage, there’s always the possibility of it getting lost or arriving late. At our Newark Airport parking company, we suggest packing a carry-on with a change of clothes, a toothbrush, some underwear, etc. to get you through a couple days if you have to.

Hotel Amenities: Before you pack your hair dryer or clothing iron, check to see if where you’re staying has these things handy. It’ll save you lots of packing space (and weight).

Pack Baggies: One of the best things you can pack is large ziploc or plastic shopping bags. They can come in very handy when dealing with dirty clothing, dirty shoes, wet bathing suits, and more.

Choose Wisely: When choosing your luggage, lean towards brighter colors or unique patterns so you can easily identify which suitcase is yours. In addition, try to choose luggage with a good amount of pockets or compartments so you can pack it efficiently.

Leave Room: Planning on buying souvenirs from your trip? Don’t forget to leave some room when you pack so you have somewhere to bring them home with you.

Start Packing Early: If you’re someone who tends to over-pack (like many of our Newark Airport parking staff members), start packing several days early. Lay out all of the things you want to bring, then once or twice a day, look at your pile with fresh eyes – this will help you eliminate some of the things you really won’t use or wear.

Remember: If you’re going somewhere with a washer and dryer, you may not need to pack as much as you think. You can simply wash a few of your favorite outfits and wear them again!

Mixing & Matching: The key to light packing is to pack as few articles of clothing as possible that can be mixed and matched together. Try packing a pair of pants that can be dressed up or down, a skirt you can pair with different tops, a sweater you can layer, etc.
