7 Common Travel Myths

EWR Airport parking

If you’re not an experienced traveler, there are probably some travel myths that you still believe (like English is spoken everywhere). Here, our EWR Airport parking company lists a few of the most common and why they’re untrue:

Jetlag is caused by a lack of sleep.

While jetlag can certainly make you tired, it’s not actually caused by a lack of sleep. When you cross over time zones, your body’s internal clock becomes disrupted, which can leave you feeling groggy, anxious, dehydrated, irritable, and more.

Traveling is expensive.

Yes, traveling can be expensive – but it can also be affordable. How much you spend on your next trip all depends on where you go, when you go, what activities you do, where you stay, and more. By doing your research, you can easily get the best bang for your buck nearly anywhere you go.

Hostels are run-down and dangerous.

When people hear the word “hostel,” many envision a run-down building built for community living and catering to dangerous people on the streets. However, many hostels are actually comparable to three-star hotels, and just as there are great hotels, there are also great hostels. Many modern hostels offer things like private bedrooms, luggage storage, and even personal lockers for added security.

Currency is best exchanged at the airport.

If you’re traveling abroad, it’s definitely convenient to exchange your currency at the airport before you go or at the airport when you arrive, but airports are notorious for offering the worst exchange rates. Instead, exchange your currency at a bank or through a currency converter for the best rates.

It costs more to book a hotel room directly.

With so many third-party websites offering hotel discounts (Orbitz, Hotwire, etc.), many travelers believe this is the best way to get the best price on a hotel room. However, many hotels will offer the same low rate through their website (and if they don’t, you can always call them and ask them to honor the price you’ve found – they’re usually happy to). Plus, when you book directly through the company, you’ll have an easier time sorting through an issue if one arises.

Travel insurance is a scam.

While it’s true you probably won’t need travel insurance during your trip, it never hurts to be protected in case you run into a worst-case scenario. Just like any other insurance, travel insurance isn’t necessary, but it can offer peace of mind and added security.

One-way tickets are more expensive than round-trip.

When you plan a trip, you likely turn to round-trip flights when you book your airfare. Whether it’s because it’s the most convenient way to book or the fact that you believe that round-trip tickets are cheaper than one-way tickets, round-trip isn’t always better. In fact, many times, you can find two one-way tickets for a lower price.
