7 Things to Do During a Long Layover

layover-ideas

While you can usually pay more for a nonstop flight, sometimes layovers are simply unavoidable (like during long trips or if you’re traveling internationally). If you have a long layover scheduled for your next business trip or vacation, our EWR Airport parking members have a few suggestions on how to pass the time:

Read a Book

What better time than during a long layover to read a book? Whether you have a story you’ve been meaning to catch up on or you have a new one you want to start, reading can be a great time waster – especially if it’s a book you can lose yourself in. If you don’t have a book, try a few magazines.

Work Out

This is best done in airports with showers. If the one your layover is in has a shower available, bring a yoga mat with you and get in some meditation time or pack a pair of sweatpants and running shoes and take a lap around the airport. Some airports even have gyms you can access during your layover, so look into it before you go.

Play a Game

If you know you’re going to have a long layover, pack a few games in your carry-on. These days, many board games are available in travel sizes for easy packing, or you can stick with a good old-fashioned deck of cards. If you’re more of a pen-and-paper games person, grab a jumbo book of crossword puzzles or sudoku. It’ll be time for your next flight before you know it.

Explore the Area

The first thing to keep in mind before you leave the airport is how much time you’ll need to come back and go through security again. If you have enough time, explore the area – catch a cab and head to one of the nearest museums, monuments, sights, or restaurants to pass the time.

Sleep

Long layovers are a great time to catch up on some sleep – especially if you weren’t able to get any on the plane. Many airports have small lounges with comfy chairs and couches that you can take a nap on – just look for an area that isn’t heavily trafficked by travelers for the best bet. You can even bring ear plugs or an mp3 player and play some soothing music to help you drift off.

Try a New Food

Instead of filling up on sub-par airplane food, save your appetite for your layover. Many airports have updated their food offerings and include some rare and upscale options, so go on a little adventure during your layover. If there’s a food or drink you’ve been wanting to try, see if it’s available and dive in.

Find Some Entertainment

If your layover is in a major airport, you’ll likely be able to find some entertainment to pass the time. Look around for art exhibits, photography exhibits, museums, live music, gardens, and more.
