A Breakdown of Your Flight Price

Here’s Where That Number Comes From

airfare

If you’ve ever shopped around for a flight, you’ve probably wondered why the price can fluctuate so much. Your flight price isn’t just the cost it takes the airline to get you to or from somewhere; in fact, there are several factors that affect your airfare. For example:

Competition

One of the biggest things airlines rely on when determining a flight price is their competition. If several other airlines are offering the same flight route for a much lower price, chances are that airline will lower their price as well to match. On the other hand, if the airline is only one of two or three offering a specific flight, they’ll be able to charge you more because they know there’s a good chance you’ll choose them.

Seats

Many times, if an airline needs to fill seats on a certain flight, they’ll lower the flight price as it approaches the departure date. However, this method can vary from airline to airline and flight to flight, so don’t always count on prices being lower closer to the departure date.

Oil

Planes need fuel in order to get you to or from somewhere, and when you book your ticket, part of your price will go to oil costs. Usually, if oil prices have been down, you’ll get a better deal for your flight and if they’ve been up, you’ll likely pay more.

Distance

In most cases, the further you fly, the more you’ll pay for a flight. If you’re flying from Orlando to Boston, you may pay around $250, but if you fly from Orlando to Paris, you’ll probably pay around $1,000. Granted, you may be able to find airfare specials from time to time, but distance is a general factor in price.

Fees

Depending on the airline you fly, you may face several different fees that are added to your flight price. Some airlines charge you for checked luggage, carry-on luggage, seat choice, food, and/or drinks. All of these can add up and can make your overall price much higher than when you booked it.
